I sneered, “That’s ridiculous, you and your big mouth just happened to ask her first.It’s not like I wasn’t going to ask.For Christ sake, I didn’t even know if I still had a penis.You’re not calling dibs on nothing.”

“Whoa there.I was just kidding,” Steve chuckled amusingly as he throws the half wet napkin back at me.“Just proving a point.”

I looked at him incredulously, “Proving a point?”

“Yea, the fact that you’re willing to be so defensive about it means you have some kind of real interest.”

Chris poked me repeatedly on the shoulder and sang, “Xander’s got a girlfriend, Xander’s got a girlfriend.Ooooo.”

I cocked an eyebrow at him, not the slightest bit amused.As if having a brown stain down the front of your pants wasn’t embarrassing enough, these guys were just adding insult to injury.“What are you like six years old?Anyway, I’m calling it a night guys, not much fun walking around like this.”

Steve laughed, “Sure man, we’ll catch you later.Remember, if you’re going to call:Three days.”

“Yea yea, three day rule, whatever.”Three days, right, noted.

Let me tell you, those were the longest three days of my life.It is really hard to focus on other activities when the back of your mind is telling you to pick up the phone and call.It is really hard when your pride as a man tells you that you should not seem desperate, that if you do, she will have you wrapped around her finger and that you really do not want that. So you try to do other things.You try to watch television, but every channel you watch is about trying to get that special girl.You try to take a nap, and visions of her smile creep into your mind.At the same time, you cannot go out because there’s that chance you’ll bump into her.Meeting again before that initial call?That’s just too awkward.So you stay home.For three days.

On the third day, whatever God who currently hates me slowed down time even more.I called the number.No one picked up.Her voicemail came on so I decided to just leave a message.

“Hi, this is Alexander.We met by coincidence a couple days ago.Though the situation was rather awkward, I think looking back we can both laugh and say, maybe, perhaps, it was meant to be.I hope you’ll give me a call back, and hopefully we can go out together.My number is—”

That’s what I wanted to say, but I think it came out that way.It probably went something like this, “Hi!This is me, I just remembered how you spilled coffee on me and uh, man, I’m really laughing at you right now.I mean, laughing about it.I mean… well, anyway I was hoping you would like to go out sometime… you know, actually drink the coffee or something.Well, call me back.”

Ever do that?Ever hang up the phone and cringe, realizing that you did every possible thing wrong?I could not even remember the things I said, I just knew that I did not leave a number or even give my name.

It was pretty much official.After a screw up like that, I would hope, if luck would have it, that I wouldn’t run into her again just for the sake of saving what little dignity I had left.There was no way I could face her after that message.

After sulking for a little while, Chris and Steve invited me out.With nothing else to look forward to, I trudged out and met up with them.They both looked at me and paused.I looked back.They looked at each other.They looked at me looking at them and started laughing.I could not imagine what could be so funny at my time of self loathing sadness.

Friends.

Friends are the people who piss you off everyday, you just don't realize it because you're so used to it that you don't even think about it anymore.

Friends are the people who call you for no other reason then to ask what you're doin and then hang up.

Friends are the people you say the most retarded stuff to, and they just shake their heads and tell you to shut the fuck up. Then you both laugh.

Friends are the people who come over your house, sit there with you, and not say anything the whole time.

Friends are the people you don't bother greeting with a hand shake anymore, because it requires too much effort.

Friends are the people who pick food off your plate while your still eating it without bothering to ask you if they can.

Friends are the people who let you do all the dangerous things you want. Because if you do it and die, they'll kick your ass.

Friends are the people who spot you money but never ask for it back, because the next time they don't have money, you spot them and never ask for it back.

Friends are the people you don't talk to for three months at a time, but when you meet up, it's like it was just yesterday.

Friends are the people you argue with for an hour, don't talk for five minutes, and then pick up the conversation like it never happened.

Friends are the people you don't need to use words with to communicate. You blink a certain way and they know what your going to say.

Friends are the people who bust on you, but if someone else you both don't know says the same thing, they're the first ones to jump in and defend you.

So, if time could be rewound, then it would all make sense. The cute waitress came up the stairs with a tray full of six hot mocha lattes for the group of rowdy teens sitting directly to the left of us. As all smart waitresses tend to do, she lifted the tray above her head, blocking her view of what was above her to have a better view of the steps she would have to tread in order to reach the second floor.

At the same time, the other girl, who had just finished her drinks with her group of friends proceeded down the steps. As all smart girls tend to do, she chose to pay attention to her friends walking behind her instead of at the steps below. She looked back just in time to see a tray full of hot mocha lattes directly in front of her. As a reaction to that, she took a step backwards, not wanting to knock over the tray, but stumbled over a chair placed too far out from its table. As a reaction to that, not wanting to fall, she grabbed at the closest thing to her: a tray full of hot mocha lattes.

So the next thing I know, there is a girl lying across my lap with a warm burning sensation in my crotch. Usually, this would be considered a great thing, but it definitely was not the girl making me all hot and bothered. I wanted to get up and scream, but my mind told me to make sure the girl was ok first. The way she fell was unnatural and though I could feel my inner thighs being scalded, I could not bring myself to throw the poor girl off.

“Are you ok?” I said through clenched teeth.

She slowly worked her to her feet, “Oh my god, I’m so sorry!”

“It’s ok, hold on while I scream in pain.” I bit my lip and began fanning my crotch.

I am sure it looked awkward on the outside, but when pain comes to parts of the body that should seldom feel pain, what has to be done must be done. The cute waitress came over with some towels and hesitated, not knowing if she should help wipe my pants or to just hand me the towels. I saw Chris and Steve grinning sinisterly while glancing at the waitress and me, knowing full well what they were thinking. Before the cute waitress could decide what to do, I grabbed the towel from her, saving her the trouble and embarrassment. I thanked her and told her I was alright.

The assaulting lady came up to me with that feminine look of pleading for forgiveness. It was the first time I had a chance to look at her, what with the scalding crotch and all, and I have to admit, she was cute. She was on the tall side. I was just above six feet tall, and I was almost looking eye to eye with her. Her hair was tied back, and she had it in a baseball cap, the rest of her body was defined by a simple baby tee and low rise jeans. She was the epitome of the girl next door.

“Are you alright? I’m so sorry. I’m so embarrassed right now.” She said with her hand over her mouth. Her cheeks were rosy and the rest of her face was still recovering from redness, so I knew she was being sincere.

I laughed it off, “I’m ok, it’s not everyday I get hot beverages spilled on me by a girl, so I consider it a compliment.”

Steve jumped in, “What my friend is trying to say is you should make it up to him. How about you give me your phone number and we’ll arrange it so you can treat him to coffee someday?”

She looked at my pants. I looked at my pants. I looked at her. I looked at Steve. Steve looked at my pants. I didn’t know what was going on or what Steve was thinking, so I just smiled at her uncomfortably. She shot the same smile back.

“Ok, maybe not coffee, but something.” Steve smirked at his own previous remark.

“Um, ok,” she said. She took out a pen and scribbled something on a napkin. She handed it to me. “I didn’t catch your name.”

“Oh, right, I’m sorry. My name’s Xander, as in, Alexander.” I looked down at the paper she gave me and saw her name and her number. “It’s nice to meet you, Kristina.”

She smiled, not knowing what else to say. I stood there as well, no real words coming to mind. It wasn’t really the average situation to strike a conversation. I mean, what do you say to a girl who just gave you her number, but might have only done it because she felt bad for spilling coffee on you?

“Well, it’s nice to meet you Kristina. I’m sure Xander here will give you a call sometime this week.” Steve saved me from trying to find something to say and gave Kristina her way out.

“Yes, it was uh, nice meeting you, hopefully next time we can talk in much dryer conditions.” I said, still dabbing at my pants.

Kristina began blushing again as she walked down the stairs, “Yes, nice meeting you. Again, I’m sorry.”

“Really, don’t worry about it. It happens all the time. I mean, not to me, but I’m sure there’s plenty of mishaps and spills all over the place.” I said while she went down the steps. I stood there until she circled around the steps to the floor below. She glanced up one final time and waved goodbye. When I returned the wave, she smiled and hopped down the steps to catch up with her friends.

I sighed and slumped back into my chair. It was such an awkward situation. The napkin Kristina wrote on was half wet. I must have unconsciously dabbed it at my wet pants. In my relief, the number was still readable.

As I looked at the number, Steve grabs it from me. “Ah, Kristina,” He shoots me a look. “I call dibs on her.”

“What?” I was confounded. “You call dibs on her? She spilled six cups of coffee on ME, not YOU.”

“Yes, but we wouldn’t have gotten her number if I didn’t take the initiative. See Xander, I think ahead.”

Well, things were starting to get more complicated.
